If you feel like venturing over the bridge these school holidays, why not visit Melbourne Museum? While you are there, head to The Grub Food Van for a coffee or a treat. It is a ‘blink and you will miss it’ kind of place to be found just off Brunswick Street – a short stride from the Museum.
The Grub Food Van is an airstream caravan operating in the courtyard of the Grub Hole – an eclectic and comfortable mess hall. The shiny silver van serves a wide range of food, from artisan breads, cakes, breakfast eggs and ploughman’s platters, to duck parfait. Old favourites are given a slight twist; even the humble juice gets a makeover. Try the freshly squeezed pineapple juice with star anise and you won’t regret it. The menu is seasonal and changes subtly each day according to what is available. Produce is locally sourced, with many of the veggies coming from the greenhouse on site. There is no kids’ menu, but there is much to keep children happy, including a cubby house, table tennis and toys.
The eatery was very busy when we were there on Saturday, but there was still plenty of space for our two prams. While we only dropped in for a quick caffeine hit, it was very tempting to stay longer soaking up the sun.
Before you head there, don’t forget to pack an old book or two. There is a book swap to be found next door, where you might just find your next holiday read!
