After perusing Wayward Books on Bellair Street, we were on the scout for an afternoon treat and a caffeine hit, when we stumbled upon Spinifex Cafe. Passing by, we had an inkling it was child-friendly when we noted four babies comfortably seated in highchairs enjoying their meals out with their respective parents.
Staff greeted us immediately, helped us pick out a pram-friendly spot, and found us a chair for our son’s wriggly bottom. We quickly decided that the coconut waffles were for us, and as soon as they arrived, we inhaled them. Whoops. They were fluffy, they were golden and they were yum. My son was thoroughly entertained by the funny faces the staff pulled at him from the kitchen, and we even got to read the newspaper.
The cafe offers both a breakfast and a lunch menu as well as baked takeaway goods. I am told the Israeli baked eggs are a must if you are going for brekky. There is a small kids’ menu with the familiar cheese toastie, and also healthy pastas. Some older kids at the cafe had a great deal of fun picking out a treat from the colourful and reasonably priced display of biscuits. It was too cold on the day for us, but the cafe also has a small courtyard out the back. While there are no toys to entertain kids, it is a good space for crawlers when bums get too wriggly for the provided chairs.
With great service, hearty food and a relaxed kid-friendly environment, Spinifex has definitely made it onto our Saturday breakfast list of favourites.Address: 192 Bellair Street, Kensington, 3031 Phone: (03) 9372 2285 Mon – Sun: 7 am – 4:30 pm
