At the end of the shopping strip in Barkly Street, West Footscray, when you think you’ve passed the very last eatery, you’ll find Post Industrial Design; once a fascinating retail and gallery space, now also a fantastic family-friendly café.
We visited on a cool and rainy Wednesday afternoon, seeking a coffee hit and a bit of time out. On entry, the pram glided across the vast polished concrete floors like a dream and we knew we had made a good café choice!
The huge interior is divided in two, with a café on one half and a retail space on the other, selling gorgeous hand-made jewellery, gifts and accessories in the front, and unique children’s toys in the back.
We sat down on the polished reclaimed timber benches, the staff assisting us to maneouver our pram into just the right spot. Highchairs were provided. The menu was impressive, and included, we were happy to find, kid-sized drink options (at kid-sized prices!). The coffee was powerful and the mixed berry smoothie was rich and sweet.
There was plenty to gaze around at in the store. Intricate industrial-chique light fittings glittered above, large and colourful artworks adorned the walls, and there was a plethora of eye-catching objects to discover. We even spotted a small basket of kids’ toys for use by café patrons.
We’ll definitely be back next time we have a gift to buy; quality hand-made leather bags, wooden and ceramic jewellery, and vintage book ends were hard to resist, as were the tiny leather baby shoes, old-fashioned woollen toys and baby mobiles. Browse the store section of Post Industrial Design and we’re sure you’ll leave with more than just a full belly!
