Last Friday Eden and I were invited by the lovely Kylie, to try out Kangatraining. Kangatraining is a complete workout focussing on cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and muscle strength. It is designed to assist new mums to develop and strengthen pelvic floor muscles in an environment that welcomes and nurtures the mother and baby relationship.
After a fairly stressful morning getting our respective babies ready, attending appointments and one of us (not saying who) locking keys in the car, we arrived at Newport Gardens Early Years Learning Centre. A bit out of breath already, feeling unfit and worried about how I was going to lift my 11kg baby into a carrier and do squats (!), I was immediately put at ease by Kylie. Kylie explained the process, helped us get our babies into some very comfy Manduca baby carriers and introduced us to the class.
At Bubba West we love businesses that support parents, and Kangatraining is an exemplary model. Kylie, a mother of four herself, had two of her children in the class. Throughout the session, babies are included in the workout, and there is flexibility if a baby needs timeout to settle, or in my son’s case time to crawl over to the enticing dishwasher, and press all the buttons enthusiastically. This all helped to give the class an intimate family feel and it was easy to relax and focus on the workout.
We were taken through a number of gentle aerobic routines that involved our babies. My little one loved the warm-up dancing and thought the moves we made very funny. He had a ball being lifted into the air when it came to the floor work, and I have to say seeing him smile, distracted me from some of the harder bits. When it came to the aerobic routine we strapped our babies into carriers. My son loved it, and drifted peacefully to sleep while we worked out.
I must admit I usually avoid aerobic classes. I’m not the most co-ordinated person, I have trouble following routines and tend to head left when someone yells right. This usually makes me quite flustered and embarrassed in classes. However at Kangatraining I felt at ease; I suppose having babies around giggling at everything that you do anyway, a calm understanding presenter and the comfortable environment made all the difference.
I would definitely recommend the class for new mothers. It is a fantastic way to meet other mums, play with your baby, learn new exercises and get fit. The class is also flexible enough to suit those with toddlers. We had fun, sweated a bit, laughed a great deal and left with sleepy and relaxed babies.WHERE Community Room – Newport Gardens Early Years Learning Centre Maddox Road, Newport WHEN Wednesday & Friday mornings 9.45am COST First Kanga session FREE Casual Kanga session $15 10 Class Pass $120 CONTACT Kylie Conway to book.
