Yesterday we took time out to meet up and enjoy a coffee at the whimsically named Jellybread Cafe. We have been meaning to review the venue properly for a while and whenever we talk about kid-friendly cafes, we get asked the question ‘have you heard of Jellybread?’. It was a rainy day, but we managed to catch some much-needed afternoon sun outside in the cafe garden before the deluge. While our little ones amused themselves with their sippy cups and the cute menus made from record covers, we lazed back and soaked in the calm. It was a quiet afternoon, but we noticed quite a few mothers with prams coming and going, including one large mothers’ group. It is easy to see why; the cafe goes out of its way to cater for children and parents, with easy access for prams and change facilities, and a garden after any child’s heart.
Inside, the cafe is retro kitsch with memorabilia, 70s dinner sets, records and posters adorning the pink walls. We especially loved the 1950s formica highchairs, which held our babies comfortably. There were a number of tasty cakes and biscuits on display and lots of books for kids and big kids to pass the time with. In the front room, there are cozy corners to sit in and absorb a book if you are on your own. The back courtyard garden has ample space to laze around, toys and tricycles to keep the kids amused, as well as a superhero-purple caravan with a play kitchen. Our bubbas are too little to enjoy these facilities, but they did really enjoy peering in at the guinea pigs.
There is a separate menu for children, which is reasonably priced, and it was great to see that some of the offerings were small versions of adult meals. Too often children are served only fish fingers and fairy bread at cafes and it is nice to see that they are catered for with healthy and yummy food. Like the adult menu, offerings range from sandwiches, to poached fruit, or eggs served on sourdough. I can’t see any toddler resisting a soft poached egg on toast!
We love venues that make it easy for parents to be parents and kids to be kids. Jellybread definitely ticks all of our boxes. We can’t wait to go back when our bubbas are old enough to explore the garden. Jellybread is open til 4 pm every day. We are told weekends can get very busy, so get there early if you intend to have lunch. During the week there is plenty of space for play groups.
