Somewhat new on the Yarraville café scene, Garazi is part wedding car showroom, part café; that means things that go ‘broom!’ to fascinate your kids, and delicious coffee to keep you happy, too!
If you’ve ever ventured out with your pram in search of a coffee or lunch in Seddon or Yarraville, you’ve no doubt experienced the obstacle courses that these busy cafe strips can become. Garazi is located at the quiet end of Gamon Street, in Yarraville, so next time, make tracks here for a more relaxing outing.
There are plenty of car spaces along Gamon Street, and Garazi’s interior is spacious enough to accommodate a large number of prams. On our visit, the large communal table was packed with mums and babies having a great time over lunch. Lots of high chairs make it the perfect location for your next mothers’ group meeting. The staff even gave us and our pram a special and rather grand entry through the huge roller doors in the car showroom!
Not only do you have space to park the convoy, but toddlers and older kids alike (not to mention adults) will have so much to look at that you needn’t worry about mid-meal cries of boredom. In fact, if you have a car-obsessed toddler, you might find yourself enjoying a long lunch while you’re little one investigates!
And there’s plenty to investigate. The main attractions in the centre of the café are a gorgeous old-style mini and a stripped MK5 Jaguar; the panelling has been removed to reveal the car’s engine and chassis. Keep your kids under supervision, because they’ll no doubt want to ‘drive’ these tempting vehicles, which isn’t allowed for safety reasons.
Once you’ve settled in, you’ll start to notice the car theme throughout.
Any fractious child will soon be captivated by a ‘spot the car part’ game. We’ll give you parents a head start; check out the specials board, the salt and pepper holders, the couches, the communal table top, coffee table and the creatively named menu items for a start!
Don’t worry, when your food arrives, all bums will be firmly planted on seats; there are some delicious items on the Garazi menu. Breakfast is especially good. We had the fresh Garazi granola and the unusual house-made crumpets with honey and creamed feta, but there are also eggs galore and a tasty-looking lunch selection. Along with coffee, there is a great selection of herbal teas, and, for the kids, there is a half-sized hot chocolate or chai latte on offer – what a great idea!
If you’re little ones are not quite as enthused by all the cars as you thought they’d be, there is a stack of Etch A Sketchs to keep them busy at the table.
Owners Kon and Tony are super friendly and ever happy to see parents and kids come through their doors, so consider Garazi next time you need a coffee break, or for your next mothers’ group meeting.
Don’t forget to send the kids to use the bathroom before you leave. Not only will this prevent homeward-journey accidents, but they’ll be delighted to enter the bathrooms through a vintage telephone box!
