I’m not sure exactly why, but for a long while I didn’t consider Common Galaxia to be a particularly child-friendly cafe. Perhaps it was the specialty coffee, the gorgeous and minimal interior design, or maybe the unique and scrumptious menu offerings… but then, why shouldn’t a cafe be able to offer all of these things, while also catering for kiddies and their parents? Common Galaxia has become one of mine and my daughter’s favourite mid-week coffee spots!
It’s true, on weekends this popular cafe packs out quicker than the cronuts fly off the shelf, and it’s tricky to squeeze a pram in when all the tables are filled, but mid-week, Common Galaxia is a laid back and spacious cafe offering all a parent and child could need.
First and foremost, the coffee (Seven Seeds) is fantastic. Always. You can also opt for affogato, single blend and filter coffee; I myself can never go past a good old flat white. And, while the coffee is pretty top-notch, the staff won’t make you feel ashamed for ordering decaf! There are also fresh juices, Acai berry smoothies, aromatic chai, and milkshakes.
When it comes time to order food, I always spend an age choosing from the myriad delicious-sounding options. On my last visit, I opted for a breakfast board to share with my one-year-old. It came with a bowl of crunchy granola, plus a poached egg on sourdough toast, with avocado, hummus, and goat’s cheese – plus a fresh orange juice. We polished it off between the two of us in no time.
If I’d known my daughter was going to eat the majority of the meal I would have ordered her a separate meal from the kids’ menu! Items include cereal, toast with a choice of toppings, and, to my delight, a half serve of bacon and poached egg on toast.
To top off a fantastic dining experience, there are great baby changing facilities in the bathroom the staff are always friendly and helpful, greeting my baby and fetching her a high chair. On one occasion, I watched a three-year-old winding up for a tantrum after being told by his mum that she’d ordered him a baby cino; ‘But I’m not a baby,’ he protested, ‘I’M A BIG BOY!’ The waitress had overheard, and promptly brought over a larger-sized cup of froth; ‘One BIG BOY cino…?’ What a fantastic gesture – AND quick thinking!
If you haven’t yet been to Common Galaxia, even after all their rave reviews, rest assured that it is, indeed, a kid- and parent-friendly cafe! Common Galaxia was named after the small and tenacious fish that live in the Maribyrnong River – but the humble namesake belies the experience on offer at this fab local that has become a favourite in our house.Address: Shop 3-4, 130 Victoria St, Seddon Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:30 am – 4 pm Saturday – Sunday: 8 am – 4 pm
