If you live in or near Yarraville, chances are you’ve heard about Butcher 128. The new cafe space is a beautifully converted old butcher’s shop. The original stainless steel aesthetic has been retained to great effect, complementing aqua and black tiles, and polished concrete floors that make your pram wheels sing! And there’s plenty more to please parents and kiddies alike.
Venture out the back of the venue, where you’ll find a light indoor/outdoor feel, with communal tables sprouting fresh herbs – and the occasional prehistoric inhabitant! There’s a very kid-friendly ‘backyard’ space that looks like someone’s homely yard, but neater: complete with sandpit, chalkboard, and plastic pink flamingos. On our visit, the cafe was full of little people, toddling around the courtyard, inspecting the pebbled lanscaping, and discovering dinosaurs among the plantings. Several mums with teeny tiny babies looked right at home with plenty of pram space.
I can imagine enjoying this cafe as much on a sunny day as during a mid-winter downpour, relaxing in the sunroom as the rain falls outside.
Baby change facilities in each unisex toilet were some of the best we’ve seen in a long time: clean, spacious, and comfortable. Highchairs are also clean, new and functional.
And what of the coffee? We’re happy to report that it was as good as the fitout! This mum will be back soon to sample the menu.
